An automatic fleet: Top of the best new automatic cars

A huge advantage of modern automatic cars is that you now get to choose from several different styles of gearbox. Usually, the distinction between them lies in the way gears are changed.

Usually, the distinction between them lies in the way gears are changed. Below are a few examples that can help you decide which transmission to go for:

  • Traditional automatic - the torque converter has been around since the 1940s and changes gear more slowly than a DSG
  • Dual-clutch automatic (DSG)- gear changes are quick; the gearbox operates electronically with two clutches (one for even-numbered gears, one for odd-numbered)
  • Automated manual (ASG)- in this case, the gearbox is operated electronically but it is still manual
  • Continuously variable transmission (CVT)- this is controlled by an on-board computer, this gearbox works with cones and belts

These types of gearboxes have their advantages and disadvantages. Automatic cars are, without a doubt, very convenient and fuel-efficient and so we have compiled a list of the best cars to add to your fleet:

For a city fleet

If your company car drivers tend to be in the city a lot of the time then the new Citroen C1 1.0 is one to consider. This small car is very affordable and offers low running costs thanks to its 1.0-litre engine and a five-speed ETG manual automatic gearbox. Other great features include electrically adjustable heated door mirrors, remote control locking and LED daytime running lights. You’ll have no problem parking this mini - it can fit into the tightest of spots! The reversing camera also makes parking very easy, which all adds up to a car that’s perfect for city driving.

For a small car fleet

VW Polo

The VW Polo automatic might be a classic but it’s very versatile. With its seven-speed DSG gearbox it’s great for both the city and the motorway. The turbo 1.8-litre engine offers a combined mpg of 47.9. It’s available with three or five doors and has an impressive 280-litre boot capacity. The Polo is spacious on the inside and has been awarded a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Also, all models come with great features such as electronic stability control, hill hold and anti-whiplash headrests.

For a fuel-efficient fleet

The Citroen C3 1.4 Airdream

The Citroen C3 1.4 Airdream is both comfortable and spacious and offers impressive miles per gallon, making it very fuel-efficient. It’s both easy and fun to drive, and is ideal for both urban and county driving. The C3 1.4 Airdream has an ESG automatic gearbox and there are three trim levels: VT, VTR+ and Exclusive.

For a larger car fleet

Toyota Rav4

If you prefer to include larger automatic cars in your fleet, then the Toyota Rav4 should be on your radar. It has a CVT automatic gearbox, which makes for smooth, fast gear changing, and a 2.0-litre engine for powerful performance. Two trims, Icon and Invincible, are available, with the Icon trim boasting features such as LED daytime running lights, childproof door locks and anti-trap protection. The large tyres soften bumps on the road, ensuring a comfortable journey and making the Rav4 suitable for both in-city and off-road driving.

For a eco-friendly fleet

Renault Zoe

The Renault Zoe, powered by an 88bhp electric motor, offers a smooth drive without damaging the environment. Another benefit is the affordable price; this car provides real value for money. It comes in three trim levels - Expression, Dynamique Zen and Dynamique Intens, with various features, including sat nav, climate control and cruise control. The boot space (338 litres) is in no way sacrificed, as the battery is stored in the front, and the Zoe is a great choice for eco-friendly businesses.
