Toyota GB has today released the following statement concerning Prius in the UK:

‘Toyota today announced a global recall on the latest, third-generation Prius built before 27 January 2010. This will involve 8,500 cars in the UK.

To date, there have been no accidents linked to this issue reported in Europe. No other Toyota or Lexus models are affected by this latest recall action in Europe.

Toyota GB would like to apologise to its customers for any concern this issue has caused.

The recall is being taken in response to reports of inconsistent brake feel during slow and steady braking on bumpy or slick road surfaces when the anti-lock braking system (ABS) is actuated.

This recall will consist of a software upgrade in the anti-lock braking system. The procedure will be carried out free of charge and will take approximately 40 minutes using standard test equipment in use at all authorised Toyota service centres.

In keeping with VOSA’s code of practice, Toyota will write individually to every owner or keeper in the next few days having obtained their contact details from the DVLA.

In the meantime, the cars are safe to drive. At no time are drivers without brakes. Toyota GB guarantees to every customer its utmost attention to making this upgrade as quickly and efficiently as possible.’

If customers have any questions or concerns regarding the above, please ring Toyota GB Customer Relations on 0800 1388 744, open 8am - 8pm during the week

A second letter will be sent to all owners/keepers inviting them to contact their chosen Toyota service centre to book a date and time for their car to be attended to.

To support this activity, Toyota has set up an additional website www.toyota.co.uk/recall and a telephone helpline 0800 1388 744 to provide information about the recall process and advice to owners.

Toyota is planning a Prius SUV
Friday, 13 November 2009 00:00

Toyota is planning a new Prius car, which will take the form of a station wagon or SUV, press reports say.

It will be powered by a new kind of battery and will go on sale by the end of 2010, says the Yomiuri newspaper. Toyota declined to comment. Its hybrid Prius car is championed by environmentalists around the world, while the traditional sports utility vehicle has been vilified.

The whole car industry is competing to come up with more powerful green cars. The paper says the new car would use a lithium-ion battery for the first time - which is more powerful than the nickel-metal hydride battery currently used in hybrids.

If Toyota is successful, it could widen its lead over rivals. The Prius has been a top-seller, benefiting from government ecological incentives

The worst Winter in 30 years?
Saturday, 09 January 2010 00:00

Our friends at the AA tell us that they have rescued more than one third of a million drivers during the current cold spell.AAsolo_200

In a winter that is being described as the worst in 30 years, the UK has seen temperatures plummet causing roads to grind to a halt, schools to close, planes at airports be grounded and more snowmen built in any period since 1981.

Since the snow started on the evening of Thursday 17th December, 2009, the AA has seen unprecedented levels of demand for its services and has dealt with nearly 340,000 breakdowns (338,000) – over double the normal amount for this period.

Between 18th and 24th December – 133,000 breakdowns
Christmas Day to 31st December – 92,000 breakdowns
New Year's Day to Thursday 7th January – 113,000 breakdowns

Gritting the hard shoulder
It is good to see that the Government is taking action over the problems on the road network. It is probably sensible and pragmatic to stop salting the hard-shoulder in order to preserve dwindling salt stocks although it will make life more difficult for AA patrols.
